Role-Playing Games as Functional Art
Many think of art as something that is created by an artist and set free into the world. A fixed object, unchanging. However, this is an incomplete picture. Art is made when an idea is given form and explored. True art is not the act of creation, but the reaction to it.
Tabletop roleplaying games offer opportunities for deep interaction on a mental stage. We believe that these experiences can be as deeply meaningful as any other art form, exploring concepts actively as a participant rather than an observer.
By creating tabletop games from an artistic and functional perspective, we seek to capture and engage with ideas, emotions, and states of mind. To hold a mirror to the player and let them shift their perspective, inhabiting their in-game persona more fully.
In concrete terms, we seek to:
Create harmony between content, mechanics, and visuals.
Keep content visceral by focusing on sensory input and emotional impact.
Avoid dense, wordy, or unnecessary language that obscures important information.
Draw on symbolism, metaphor, and other literary tools, treating writing a tabletop RPG with the same care and attention to detail as a novel
Publish games that stand apart from the crowd in writing quality, visual appeal, ease of use, and playability.
